Amy Wenzel: Down Under
When I was a kid I couldn’t imagine a place that could possibly be any more magical than the land of Australia. No offense to my mother land, but I remember daydreaming during Geography class that I could live down under and have a kangaroo for a pet. To this day if I hear anyone speak with an Aussie accent my heart melts into a puddle around my feet. Sigh. I’m enamored, infatuated and mystified by this breath-taking far away place I’ve never seen. I’d probably jump through flaming hoops in a gasoline doused night gown for the chance to be able to spend some time there.
And that’s why I went full-on crazy pants when an Australian photographer unexpectedly wrote one day and offered to be an event coordinator for an Amy Wenzel workshop in Melbourne. My heart stopped. My eyes glazed over. Drool started running out the corner of my mouth. The closest I’d ever come to Australia was an Outback Steakhouse, and suddenly I was being offered the chance to come teach there??? After considering the number of emails I receive from Australian photographers asking for help or advice, and the amount of blog traffic from there as well, I decided to take the plunge and make my wildest elementary school dreams come true. So David and I will be packing our bags and spending a few weeks in Australia. That is if I can manage not to pee my pants with joy in the process. (Oh, and if someone could please arrange for me to pet a Koala bear while I’m there I’d be eternally grateful!!) Now I know I’m probably supposed to act all cool, calm and collected over this, you know, like thats just how I roll, dog. But truthfully I’m in a state of dorkitude happiness over this opportunity. And much like the Pointer Sisters, “I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it.”
So without further ado, I wanted to get this info circulating regarding the Melbourne workshop we’re planning for next year.

Congratulations, Amy! I don’t know you but recently found your blog (love it!). I’m so happy for you that you finally will get to Australia! I’m a huge believer in fulfilling your traveling dreams! Best wishes as you plan!
Wow-How EXCITING!! I can’t wait to see some of the pic’s you take while your there. You work is AWESOME!
awesome!!! you will LOVE it!! I went in 2008 and could def. have spent a FEW (or more) weeks there!
My husband is from Melbourne. It’s pronounced Mel-bun. Most Aussie’s shorten any word that can be shortened! Ta is thank you… I wouldn’t advise trying to pet a koala because they are a bear with killer claws! We went to Healsville Sanctuary a few years ago. You can touch any of the non dangerous animals, but don’t stand where a kangaroo can kick you. We love Melbourne. The weather should be great in January too. Hope you have so much fun planning your trip, and an even better time living it!
Wow. You are headed to the land down under! I am so impressed and awe inspired by your work, your drive, ambition, and now….your travels
Heck, I just wish I were you
At least I can glory in the fact that I know you…and have an article of your clothing in my closet (that sounds creepy) and your pictures (of my kids) all over my walls. And mostly…that my husband and I set you and David up, or something like that.
Can I hop in your suitcase? Or better yet…can I help you pass out friendship bracelets at your Australian workshop? If you do my makeup I know I can be pretty :-)And I can do the accent SUPER well…although I tend to get it mixed up with the British. Ah well…
speechles… that is so incredible. I’m coming to your seminar!!! right after I hit New Zealand!
Woo hooo for a tour to Aust! Bring your credit.. with the exchange rate.. consider everything 35% off

In your touring.. plan a trip to the Great Ocean Road (you can probably do a tour bus day thing from Melbourne).
If you are leaving Melbourne and heading north at all. Let me know. I am in Brisbane and would love to show you guys around for a couple of days or at least give you a big list of must see items
WOOT!! Workshops are finally coming down under :D!
I am stealing “dorkitude happiness” for my next blog post. I love it
Congratulations Amy! I am so happy for you. The way you feel about Australia is exactly the way I feel about Italy! I hope someday my dream to go there will come true too!
hey Amy! so cool to hear you’re coming down to this great land of OZ!
i just had a random question… does the black line and arrows in the image have ANY relevance to your time in Australia? if so, let me know… cos i am in Adelaide…
Oooooh…I am so jealous! Have always wanted to go to Australia as well. Something about watching “Man in Snowy River” movies gave me an infatuation with that country. I am so proud of you! Great job!
Hi Amy, I recently found your blog and love your work, specially all the bright colors. Congratulations, I hope you have a blast. Look forward to hearing more about it.
Oh my gosh, I am beyond excited for you!! I think you will fit in wonderfully in the land down under, you may just decide to stay
Are you serious! That is fabulous! It will be so great to see you again
I think you need an assistant for this trip–I can be that assistant
How cool that you are doing this! You will have a blast.
amy!!! wheee!!!! what a fantabulous way to get your dream to come true! congratulations and i hope it’s everything you dreamt of and more.
Very Cool Amy! You deserve to go where-ever you like with your photography! I just love my new pics, they are so beautiful. Thanks so much for doing them for us. I am sure they will love your work in Australia too!

congrats on such a cool opportunity!
No flippin way! How awesome is that! Congrats!
Hi Amy! That’s so awesome! My husband had a chance to go to Australia with the U.S. Navy, and he said they love Americans and get this…they think our accent is cool just like we think theirs is cool
How Fun! What an amazing opportunity!!! I’m exicited for you!
WOW! Congrats Amy! I am just glad I am coming your way in June! Can’t wait!
Hi Amy! You will absolutely fall in love with Australia. My dad lived in Melbrourne for four years and I had the opportunity to visit every year he was there. The people are awesome and the city is beautiful. Congrats! That is wonderful that your dreams are coming true.
WOW! How exciting! Can’t wait to see these images!! Lucky Girl!
Woo hoot! Coming from the land ‘Down Under’ myself, this is extremely exciting! Funnily enough, I’ve just booked my ticked to the US of A. It seems surreal that you’ll actually be in Australia, however.
Amy - Your photography is incredible. You really know how to capture the essence of people with your camera! I stumbled upon your site via Dana at Old Red Barn Co. I love the vintage frame that you have created for photos and I’m hoping I can win it!
Amy,
I am a big fan! I wish I could take one of your workshops. Your site makes me also wish to have photoshop and know what to do with it! Post more pictures! They are a huge inspiration.
Oh, that ROCKS, Amy! Go you! You think I could sneak in your luggage?
That is AWESOME Amy!!!! Congrats on that fabulous opportunity!!!!!
FINALLY!!! The US is a workshop heaven, but here in Australia we suffer a constant drought of really good workshops. Can’t wait, I’m signing up and flying all the way across from Perth - we never have workshops over this way:) (the most isloated city in the world, and the most beautiful beaches known to man).
Yay!! Regards from Oz, Krystal
I lived in Melbourne for 6 months last year… it was pretty awesome! More similar to the US that I thought, but still really cool. January will be the perfect time to go, summer!
The coolest place I found for animals is the Billabong Wilflife Park, in Port Macquarie NSW — you can pet and hold so many animals!! But it’s pretty far from Melbourne, north of Sydney… are you going to be traveling around?? The beaches in Queensland can’t be beat.
Have a blast!!
P.S. It’s not pronounced “Mel-bun” lol - that’s just the Aussie accent dropping ‘r’s. They also pronounce Cairns like “Cans” but if an American says it that way they kind of look at you funny
You go girl!!!
I did it I registered!!! So excited! I can’t wait to meet you. I am dying to know the secret Quote “Getting 3 or more crying children to put their arms around each other and start laughing while looking directly at the camera for 40 frames with a 99.9% success rate every shoot. (Yes, I’m really serious on this one!)”
See you in January!
