Know Thyself
Before I wanted to be a photographer I wanted to be a pscyhologist and provide counseling for hurting individuals and families. I’m glad that didn’t pan out because I don’t think I could have handled it. But for those of you who are also into figuring yourself out, I recently came across the Enneagram, which is one of the oldest models for determining your personality/character type. It’s based on the idea that there are 9 types of people and it explains how each operates when they are at their healthiest level and their unhealthiest level. Unlike other personality tests, the point is to help you to understand yourself and others better and to learn how to overcome the “fatal flaws” that keep you from being all you can be. I am a Type 6- “The Loyalist.” It was fun reading about the different types and figuring out which one I was. You can do this here. Notice that at the bottom of the page for each type description you can click through to read a 2500 word in depth description. (That helped shed some additional light for me). Although I am not going to lie- it’s not easy reading about what you act like when you get into unhealthy levels. No one likes to hear the truth about themselves! haha. There is also a book available called Personality Types (by Don Richard Riso) that I am currently reading. David and I have enjoyed discussing our types and how it causes us to interact with each other. We couldn’t believe it when we read our compatability description. It really described our relationship. So weird! I would love for you guys to figure out what type you are and share your findings in the comments section. Give me a special holler if you are also a Type 6!
These photos are from a senior session that took place in November. I can’t believe in just 4 short weeks winter will be over!! I’m feeling better now. Thanks for all of your well wishes!

These photos are beautiful. I LOVE the post processing on them! Makes me miss that beautiful fall sunshine (AND WARMTH!)
Brilliant…simply brilliant!
Hey, Amy - beautiful as usual! Love the colors, your pp is perfect on these. Really pretty pix of a really pretty girl!
Amy these photos are simply gorgeousola
I was a Psych major up until my last year in college, it is so much fun to study people and understand personality types. The lighting from this session is heavenly!
That listing of personality types…I’m COMPLETELY a 4, the Individualistic. And right now I’m near my unhealthy zone, and that is scary….it described me perfectly…crazy. Thanks for sharing this.
I’m a type 4, the Individualist. You were right, it’s freaky how right on it is!
I love this shoot. You are amazing. I would love to know some of your camera stats on these.. if you don’t mind. Like what type of lens you are using, and if that circular blurring motion in the first photo is in the camera, or a photoshop filter. I’m guessing you’re shooting mostly into the sun with reflectors? Are you overexposing in camera or using photoshop to do that?
I tried to shoot into the sun, with the subject’s face blocking the sunlight from my camera (sun directly behind her head) but the face was so dark and grainy. I’d love to be able to mimic this lighting. You should teach seminars.
my friend introd me to this personality test and i’m a 6 as well…and crazy thing i have my master’s in counseling but do photography full-time. i’ve met so many photographers who before had pursued psych. i think there’s something about how we are curious about people’s stories and like to help them discover it…
this is funny to me because I am also a 6. I am doing both psychology and photography and I will integrate both of these worlds in my life. It’s hard but my passion lies in both so that’s my path. =)
