By the Power of Grayskull
In bed in the dark last night, david and I laid there in heated debate. It went something like this:
david: He-man was always He-man. He wasn’t like a superhero who changed into He-man when the need arose. He always walked around as He-man.
me: Honey. HUN-EEE. Are you serious right now? Come on- don’t you remember how he would hold up his sword in front of the big scary castle and change into He-man??? And the lighting would flash. He was totally a normal guy who had dual identities. Like Clark Kent.
david: Your wrong. It was fantasy. Thats like saying Gandalf the wizard was a super hero and changed into Gandalf. He-man was always He-man.
me: No! Don’t you remember how he even had that scared cat that would change into a ferocious tiger??? He-man even had a normal name for when he was wearing normal clothes. (racking my brain to try to remember what it was…)
david: Yeah right. And what was Skeletor, an accountant?
me: (laughing, but getting more adamant)- Babe, it was the whole point of the show, how he changed into He-man.
david: You are so wrong. And I am going to openly mock you when we look this up tomorrow and I prove you wrong.
me: Well, I am not going to mock you. Because I know the truth.
david: (a scoffing snort)
I laid there for T minus 5 seconds before I flew out of bed across the hall to the office to look it up on the computer. David yells, "Check Wikipedia!"
Let’s just say the story ended sadly for David and gloriously for me. I did not openly mock him, however I did force him to say, "You were right."
The best part of it all was getting on YouTube and finding the intro to the show, which I hadn’t seen since I was 6 years old. The show aired from 1983-1985 which means I was about 4 when I started watching. It was my FAVORITE show. Thats the crazy thing about your memory during those developmental years- the way things just burn into your brain and you never forget them. When this video started playing I about had a heart attack- it took me back in time more than any other experience in my adult life. It was almost- well, spiritual. It was like being 5 years old again. I remembered every word of it and every image, but I didn’t know that I remembered it! It was just locked away in my brain somewhere.
Oh, I had such a crush on He-man which further adds to my theory that I’ve always had a thing for blondes. For those of you who haven’t seen this in 25 years, be prepared. It’s even more awesome than you remember!

Hold on… You are stating on your blog… the same blog with THOUSANDS of readers that you are not openly mocking me??!! It doesn’t get much more OPEN than this!!!! Jasmine, I would have much preferred the end-zone football dance to this! To clarify, He-Man IS FANTASY, and while he does “transform” from a real guy, this isn’t exactly Clark Kent or Peter Parker (both dorks) we’re talking about. He’s a 250lb, muscular prince with a haircut taken directly from C.H.I.P.S. He was already awesome!!! Needless to say, take one look at Skeletor and tell me this isn’t Fantasy Land…

I have to say I totally sided with David when he told me about this. The problem is boys don’t care about back stories or princes, especially princes named Adam. It’s enough to have muscles and a big sword. A big sword that makes you half naked. What a dirty, dirty show.
Just a thought…Clark Kent is really Superman’s disguise…not the other way around.
Ok, ok…..I get that guys don’t care much for WHY things are. They basically just accept that they ARE. BUT. Isn’t the whole STORY of He-Man the fact that he changes from mere mortal to said “half naked man with a sword?” Anyway, David, I have to say I dont see the CHiPs Hair analogy. As a die-hard Ponch-n-Jon fan…I just don’t see it. I’m going more with Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber…

I am so happy to know I am not the only women who still thinks about He-Man as her first love. Ok ladies you know I’m right. What amazes me is the difference between the cartoons we watched growing up and the ones I let my son (3 yrs) watch. Not thinkin’ I will be letting him watch He-Man, he is into Clifford and Super Why.

David - I see no mockery here, just the solid facts of the story. It is not your fault though, you were only 3 when the show went off-air. Since Amy is being gracious and not openly mocking you herself, it is fair game that everyone else mocks you for her. Maybe you could win a “My Little Pony” debate next week and try to redeem yourself.
As David’s mother who bribed him by buying him the Castle Grayskull castle if he would quit sucking his fingers, I just had to comment that I too, after all these, years, can still quote the opening lines of the show. I also have embedded in my brain every line of our edited version of Top Gun that David watched a million times. And I can sing the theme song of Postman Pat, which was a popular chidrens show in England when David was 4. I hear it’s coming back. Isn’t the Internet wonderful? We can prove them wrong on the spot!
