Recently someone contacted me asking if I would be willing to do a photo shoot of their 3 boxers. If anything I thought it would be a fun experience so I agreed. I try to force myself out of my comfort zone anyway so that I will grow as an artist. It was so interesting walking into the situation and trying to translate my experience in photographing children into photographing hyper-active dogs. I can tell you the similarities- it still takes patience, lots of energy and sometimes sly trickery. I did end up having fun and am proud to now have a doggie portfolio.

The little guy pooped out at the end there and fell asleep right in the middle of me taking his picture.

And here is an adorable girl that left quite an impression on me with her spunky personality.

FROM THE STUDIO….

Oh my gosh, this was so much fun! Last night we had a a girls night out- eating dinner and drinking pop at Ritz Koney Island (oh the guilty pleasure of pop) then we headed up to the studio. This is Katie just being her usual crazy self…

So much news to report! Would you like the bad news first or the good news? Lets start with the bad news. The past week was a rough one for me. The first thing that happened was I came down with a terrible cold during a very busy spell with work. So that was not fun. While I was sick I managed to crash my car. I was fine, but the driver side door is not fine. Then while attempting to drive myself to Detroit in my lovely mangled car for photo shoots over the weekend, lets just say I took a few wrong turns and ended up adding 2 HOURS onto my trip. How this happened on a route I’ve driven like a gazillion times I have no idea. I seriously think I am just way too busy and apparently need to SLOW DOWN! While in Detroit at a photo session I was walking down their beautiful landscaped steps into their backyard and somehow tripped, plunging forward and ending up in a very deep lunge position that was frighteningly similar to the splits. The back foot twisted funny and cut on the rocks and is somewhat sprained. So for those of you with photo shoots this coming week…please bear with the limp and mangled car. And be on the lookout- my track record is less than comforting.

Now for the good news- I am thrilled to announce that I have a studio!! It’s a beautiful loft space downtown and we are currently putting the work in and getting it ready for November appointments! As most of you know I have specialized in natural light on location photography for a few years now, so I am more than excited to add this additonal element to my business. There will be pictures and all kinds of info (maybe even some specials) posted on the blog about the studio. So stay tuned for details.

Now for the pictures I’ve been wanting to share- these are actually from a session last weekend. I try to give parents a combination of beautifully lit headshots along with creative shots of kids being kids. There were so many great ones to share from this session, but here are a few of my very favorites.

I ADORE this one of big sister pushing her on the swings.

I’m sure its seems strange to some parents when I photograph their child inside the open front door, but this is my favorite lighting technique. Look at her peepers!

Babies & Bumblebees

Wanted to share a few from a recent session. She was the happiest 2 year old! All giggles, tons of fun and definitely seemed excited about the baby in Mommy’s belly.

Rustic Things

When my husband saw the pictures from this session he said…”makes me wish I’d had a brother.”

To me that was such a compliment because I really strive for my images to be not only creative, fresh & fun, but to be laced with emotion & meaning. Not to sound morbid- but it means a lot to me when Moms write to tell me they cried when they saw their proofs. But hey I cried the day I bought my first real camera for photography class in college. Somehow it felt like I’d been waiting for that day my whole life. I did not know it was the beginning of my life long love affair with photography. I didn’t even know if I was good at photograpy yet…all I knew was that it was burning in my blood to learn it. Now I can’t explain the driving force that leads me on. It’s like a freight train that stops for no one!

This is definitely the direction I want to go with my family portraits-

It also really touches my heart to meet Dads who are so emotionally invested in the lives of their kids. Another reason I just loved this session.

We drove out to their quaint & peaceful cottage for the session and I’d never seen anything like it. It had everything- a small lake, boats, large tractors, sheds and it even had railroad tracks. Tons of great places to photograph. The little guy wasn’t feeling that well on the day I came- but I think he did pretty good for being slightly under the weather! I love his little feet stick under the tire swing.
